About The Frugal Nook

Hi, I’m Mary Ann — welcome to The Frugal Nook.

I spent years in IT project management, which probably explains why everything I do here comes with a checklist. These days, my focus has shifted to what actually matters: making a home run smoothly without overspending, cooking meals that stretch further, and finding simple, doable ways to live well on less. I’m also a grandmother, which means a lot of what I share here gets tested (and approved) by the people I love most.

The Frugal Nook is a sister site of My Tasteful Threads, my lifestyle blog where I share left-handed crochet, travel, and cozy living. Two sites, one very organized person.

Why I Started This

The Frugal Nook actually started with a produce haul I didn’t want to waste. I had way more from the garden than I could eat before it spoiled, and instead of letting it go bad, I got serious about drying, using up, and stretching every bit of it. That one problem turned into a bigger question: what else in my home and budget could I be more intentional with?

That question became this site. It’s not about canning everything or living off-grid — it’s about the small, doable changes that add up: cooking from what’s already in the pantry, growing a few herbs you’ll actually use, and running a home without feeling like you’re constantly overspending just to keep up.

This isn’t about deprivation or living without. It’s about being intentional with what you have, and finding real joy in the process — not just tolerating it. I’m so glad you’re here, and I hope you’ll pull up a chair and stay a while.

A Little More About Me

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” — Annie Dillard

This quote resonates because it speaks to the small, everyday choices that shape how life feels and honestly, that’s most of what frugal living is. It’s not one big dramatic change; it’s a hundred small ones.

I live in Florida, which means my “cozy corner” is a Florida room with good light, a strong cup of tea, and a rotating cast of supervisors. My pets have very strong opinions about where I put things, and even stronger ones about when it’s time for a snack.

I came to blogging — and to frugal living — the same way I come to most things: by learning as I went, figuring things out through trial and error, and leaning on people who knew more than I did. I taught myself WordPress and the Kadence theme through a lot of patient clicking and the occasional frustrated restart. My IT background helped — but so did just being stubborn enough to keep going.

Most mornings you’ll find me in that Florida room before the day gets loud — something warm in a mug, a plan for what needs using up in the fridge, and at least one pet sitting somewhere inconvenient. It’s a good life. I don’t take it for granted.

Why This Space Exists

I built The Frugal Nook for people who want something calm and honest on the internet. Who are tired of content that shouts at them or makes frugal living feel like a competition. Who want practical ideas they can actually use, shared by a real person with a real budget — not a curated persona.

Everything here is created with intention and care. The recipes are ones I actually cook. The garden tips are things I actually do in my own yard. And the frugal living ideas are things I use myself — not aspirational content about a life I don’t actually have.

If you’re here for a budget recipe, a way to use up your garden haul, or a simple idea to make your home run smoother — you’re in the right place. I’m glad you found it.
