Welcome to The Frugal Nook: A Frugal Blog for Simple, Homemade Living
Welcome to The Frugal Nook
Welcome! If you’ve been looking for a frugal blog that doesn’t assume an unlimited grocery budget, or advice that tells you to “just simplify” without ever explaining how — you’re in the right place. Without my grandmother, I probably wouldn’t be thinking about any of this at all. She ran a household on far less than most of us have now, and somehow it never felt like she was doing without. The Frugal Nook is for people who want that same kind of practical, budget-friendly living. Not perfection. Just real ways to make a house feel like home without overspending to get there.
I’m Mary Ann. I built this space around something I believe pretty firmly: living well and living frugally aren’t opposites. They go hand in hand.

Why I Started This Blog
t started with a kitchen counter full of produce I didn’t want to waste. No canning, no fancy equipment. I just needed practical ways to dry it, use it up, and stretch it a little further before it went bad.
That one small problem changed the way I looked at everything else. Soon I was asking the same question about the herbs on my windowsill, the grocery bill, even how I organized my home: how do I make this go further, without making it harder? That question is really what The Frugal Nook is built around.
A lot of it comes from my grandmother, if I’m honest. She didn’t call it “frugal living.” It was just how you ran a household. Nothing went to waste, a dollar got stretched as far as it could go, and somehow the house still felt warm and put-together. I’ve spent years relearning habits she never had to think twice about, and I wanted a place to pass them along.
The haul that started it all was a huge bag of fresh basil and cilantro from a neighbor’s garden — more than I could use fresh in a week, more than I wanted to let go to waste. I started drying it on the counter, jar by jar, and realized I actually liked the process. That’s when I started paying attention to all the other small ways I could stretch what I already had.
Why Frugal Living Matters Again
Grocery prices climb. Budgets get tighter. Prices across the board are up roughly 25% since 2020, and a lot of the “simplify your life” advice out there actually costs money to follow, which never made much sense to me. Frugal living, done well, is really a return to habits that worked for generations before us which includes cooking from scratch, using what you have, borrowing instead of buying, drying your own herbs instead of tossing what didn’t get used in time. None of it is new.
It just needs a modern voice, and that’s what I’m hoping to offer here. None of it is new. It just needs a modern voice, and that’s what I’m hoping to offer here on this frugal blog.
What You Won’t Find Here
You won’t find guilt-trip minimalism, or advice that assumes you have hours of free time and a Pinterest-perfect pantry. I’m not asking you to give up the things you love — just to find smarter ways to afford them. If a tip doesn’t actually save you time or money in real life, it doesn’t make it onto this blog.
Here’s what you will find, organized into four simple pillars:
The Pillars of The Frugal Nook
Everything on this frugal blog falls under four pillars, all built around the same idea: doing more with less.
Frugal Kitchen. Budget-friendly, from-scratch recipes that stretch your grocery dollars further. Think turning a rotisserie chicken into three meals instead of one, or a pot of soup into lunch for the rest of the week.
Frugal Garden. Growing, drying, and using up your herb and produce haul before any of it goes to waste. No canning required. Just simple, low-effort ways to make a good harvest actually last.
Frugal Home. Budget-friendly ideas for home decor, organizing, and everyday household projects. The kind of small swaps and fixes that make a house feel finished without a big price tag attached.
Frugal Living. Practical tips for stretching your budget, simplifying your routines, and living well on less — including the time-management and organization habits that keep a busy day from feeling like it’s running you instead of the other way around.

About Me
I’m Mary Ann, the face behind The Frugal Nook (and its sister site, My Tasteful Threads). Before blogging, I spent years in IT project management which probably explains why everything I do here, from meal planning to home organizing, tends to come with a checklist!
These days, my focus has shifted to what actually matters to me: making a home run smoothly without overspending, cooking meals that stretch further, and finding simple, doable ways to live well on less. I’m also a grandmother, which means a lot of what I share here gets tested (and approved) by the people I love most.
The Frugal Nook isn’t about deprivation or living without, it’s about being intentional with what you have and finding joy in the process. I’m so glad you’re here, and I hope you’ll stick around.
